Read xml file, store data in db. What could be easier?

OK guys,
I am going to receive an xml doc and am going to have to parse the data
values and store them in the database. About 10 db tables are targets for the
data, with repeating groups of data and such. I have not done this with Sql
Server before. I need to be pointed in the right direction. So start
pointing!
Thanks,
Michael

Read up on "pinned tables" in BOL ..

Read up on "pinned tables" in BOL. I've never used this feature before, but
according to the reference, DBCC PINTABLE can be used to mark a table so
that it's pages are not flushed from memory. However, I'm thinking that if a
table relatively small (only a few thousand records), the table is hit quite
often, and your sever has average or better memory (1 GB or more), then the
table is mostly held in the buffer cache automatically. The article also
provides a warning that this could fill the buffer cache and not leave
enough room for servicing other tables.

Read only user and not seeing Tables, views etc

I would like to be able to setup a user that can only select information
from a View.
But when I enable security for this user, the user can see all the
tables, Views, Store Proc etc. I know it is only the names, but I don't
want the user to be able to do this, as he is only allowed to view the
view I have enabled for him.
The user can log in using Enterprise Manager and flick through the
tables, views etc, but can't read them, but he can get the names which
is what I don't want to happen.
Is there anyway of stopping the user from seeing all the other
information?

Read Only Table in SQL Server?

Is it possible to make a table (or set of tables) within a SQL Server database read only (still granting the db_datawriter fixed database role to database users) without dropping and recreating the db_datawriter database role?I don't think that you can set a table read-only if the users are member of the db_datawriter role.

But you can created a new role in which you will give the SELECT right on every table and the INSERT and UPDATE on some table.

The other possibility is to DENY tthe INSERT and UPDATE rights on the table that you want to set Read-Only. The Deny always override the Allow right. This way, your user will be part of the db_datawriter and you will explicitly override (and deny) the insert and update rights on some table.

Read information from excel file into ms sql table ?

Hi,

I want to insert a long list of articles and prices from a excel ark to two different database tables. These tables are linked together with a unique id, called obj_num.

Is there any possible way to do this ? Right now I do i manually and it takes for ever!

Read from tables when another transactions isolationlevel is ReadCommited

I need to be able to read from tables while a transaction is running. This
transaction could take 20-30 minutes. I don't want to be able to read
uncommitted data that has been written in this transaction though.
I looked at NOLOCK but that says it reads uncommitted data.
Any suggestions?READPAST allows you to read past the locked rows.

If it only effects the inserted and updated then the READPAST will work.

Louis thanks for your reply.

But this does not seems to solve my problem.

Bulk insert will not be right in this situation, coz. I have to
manipulate data also.

for example. if some record (id) already exist in data, in that case
only updation may require.

If I could read cell by cell data from excel sheet, then only this
level of manipulation is possible.

Probably the easiest approach is to BULK INSERT or DTS the spreadsheet
into a staging table, then do an INSERT into the target table. That
way you can check and clean up the data while it's in the staging
table, and before it goes to the 'real' table.

Simon|||> If I could read cell by cell data from excel sheet, then only this

If you're more comfortable doing arrays/loops, I don't think T-SQL has
it. I would suggest bulk inserting into a temp table. Update
(manipulate it). Identify new records and insert. Identify existing
records and update.

Reacting to DB events

I'd like to build an application that will react to specific changes to
data in a set of tables in a database. The application would replicate
these data changes to another database. The target database won't be
SQLServer. Neither is this simple replication, at times the application
will need to get extra data from the source database before the target
is updated.
In other DBMS systems I am involved with the DBMS has the facilty to
write to an application message queue so that the monitoring application
only has to monitor the queue rather than a database. What I'd like to
do is something like this:
1. Some application changes data in a table.
2. A trigger reacts to the change and writes a message to an application
queue.
3. A windows service/process monitors the queue and picks up the
message. It then carries out whatever replication/DB actions are necessary.
This would mean defining a number of new triggers on existing tables and
developing the windows service/process. Existing applications and the
existing tables in the database would remain unchanged. I'm not a
windows programmer but I have someone in my team who is and who will
build the windows service/process.
The bit I'm unsure about is how a trigger can write to an application
queue or communicate with the windows service/process. I may be using
the wrong terminology as I have more knowledge of Unix than Windows.
Could anyone help with how I can do this or suggest any alternative
strategies.
Thanks In Advance.
LaurenceYou can get all the queuing infrastructure for free. SQL Server 2005 include
s a functionality called
"Service Broker", where your trigger does SEND to write to the queue and the
service uses RECEIVE to
read off of the queue.

re: This recordset is not updatable

Hi all,

I created a form that links to a view. The view joins the two tables and both of these tables are defined w/ Primary keys. But when I try to update the table is giving an error in Access form: "This recordset is not updatable".
Would anyone have an explanation for this?
I'm using AC2K and SQL Server 2K.
Thanks!You can only update columns in the view from one table with one update statement. You can only update columns if you have all of the columns in the declared PK for the table in the view.

RDO resultset performance problem

Hi to all,
I have a big performance problem with looping threw rdoresultset.
I made some very complex sql queries. They link like 5 tables and uses a
couple subqueries. The number of returned rows is something like 1000. Query
execution takes about 1 second, which is completly acceptable. But before I
can display result to the user, I need to perform some calculations over
returned rows. To loop threw resultset (movenext) takes 2 seconds, which is
VERY slow! The procedure is very optimized, so each value in resultset in
fetched only once. How can I access all data in the resultset in a much more
efficient way? I do not need to update any row, all I need to is to get
values from resultset.
Query is optimized for fast data access. I can not perform arithmetic
operations directly in query. The amount of data returned by the server is
something like 15kb, which is very small. I am using RDO and cursor library
is rdUseOdbc. For resultset I tryed to use different parameters, ie
readonly, forwardonly,... but performance does not change. And the server I
uses is SQL serer 2000.
Any idea would be really appreciated!!

Please note that RDO is deprecated so you might want to look into using
equivalent technologies in .NET or if you must do Native code, ADO.

Marko ErzenHi
As you don't show code then it is not possible to say if your evaluation
that the work can not be done in T-SQL is correct. You don't say how you are
connecting, but using OLEDB and not ODBC would help. If you have to use ODBC
makes sure that you are not using tracing on the ODBC connection. Also try
using rdUseServer instead of rdUseODBC. You may also want to see if ADO
performs better.

If I use the rdUseServer then query executes four times slower. But movenext
method is fast, very fast. The total duration of the query and local
processing is almost equal using the tdUseODBC. But in this case all other
queries in the application slows down too much. So rduseServer is not a good
option.
I also tryed using the ADO connection. The performance is almost the same as
using the RDO object. And I am not tracing queries.
Here is a chunk of the SQL in question:

SUM(ISNULL(re.nr_of_rooms,0)) is not needed, you may get a warning for
nulls but it would expect nr_of_rooms to be not null with a default of
0.
You may want to use derived tables for your sub-queries. This is
usually quicker for larger result sets.
I would prefer to use JOIN syntax as this may make it clearer.
Look at the query plan and possibly try the index tuning wizard.

RDA Push fails with SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition

Hello
I have a SQL Server 2005 (build 9.0.3050) database with tables belonging to
different schemas. I am in the process of developing a Windows Mobile 5.0
application that will work against this database, and Iâ'm planning to use
Remote Data Access with SQL Server 2005 CE to synch data.
I have my RDA all set up and working correctly IIS-wise, and have no problem
pulling a table from my database. However, when I attempt to push a modified
table back to the database, I get an â'Internal error: Failure setting up
bindings, possibly caused by insufficient permissions.â' error (which equates
to error 28621: SSCE_M_BINDINGS), which according to
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172898.aspx is an internal error
which â'cannot be resolved by common troubleshooting techniquesâ'. The
â'insufficient permissionsâ' is a red herring I think, since the problem
persists even if the SQL Server login that is being used for RDA is in the
sysadmin role.
Iâ've attempted to identify the problem by starting from scratch with a new
database and a new table with a couple of test columns. With the table
freshly created as dbo.TableName RDA works fine. However, when I create a
schema and transfer the table to the schema, RDA push fails as above, so to
me it looks like the schema is causing the problem.
Anyone any ideas about this? All help greatly appreciated!
Thanks - GrahamIn case this helps anyone else, I lodged a support call with Microsoft about
this and it has been confirmed that "SQL Server Compact Edition does not
support RDA.Push for non-default Schema tables". Hopefully this will be
fixed in the future.

the base table name. Crucially, the synonym must be named the same as the
base table ie 'CREATE SYNONYM dbo.MyTable FOR MySchema.MyTable'.

RDA Push fails with SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition

Hello

I have a SQL Server 2005 (build 9.0.3050) database with tables belonging to
different schemas. I am in the process of developing a Windows Mobile 5.0
application that will work against this database, and I’m planning to use

I have my RDA all set up and working correctly IIS-wise, and have no problem
pulling a table from my database. However, when I attempt to push a modified
table back to the database, I get an ‘Internal error: Failure setting up
bindings, possibly caused by insufficient permissions.’ error (which equates

which “cannot be resolved by common troubleshooting techniques”. The
‘insufficient permissions’ is a red herring I think, since the problem

I’ve attempted to identify the problem by starting from scratch with a new

RDA Pull method not creating tables/inserting data

I can't see what is going on, this is the situation:

I call the Pull method, specify the table to be affected, the query to be used, the connection string to the remote SQL server, the tracking options (On) and the Error table. The pull method executes with no errors however, no table is ever created. I don't know why, here's what I have done so far:

I read the SQL BOOKS ONLINE help on preparing RDA, I set up the IIS virtual directory for anonymous access and on the connection string I send in the user name and password for the SQL server, I went into the SQL Server and grated access to the user name to the database that I am going to access and I made the user a db_owner.

So, according to SQL BOOKS ONLINE I have everything right however, it won't populate, so right now I am open to suggestions on how to get this to work, heres the code:
---------
string rdaOleDbConnectString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=<Server>;Initial Catalog=<DB>; User Id=<User>;Password=<Password>"; (it's not exactly like this, but in it has the proper values)
string connectionString = "Data Source=\"\\Program Files\\client\\db\\MobileDB.sdf\"";

SqlCeRemoteDataAccess rda = new SqlCeRemoteDataAccess("http://10.1.1.206/mobile/sqlcesa30.dll",
connectionString);

IList _tableNames = new ArrayList();
IList _queries = new ArrayList();

############
Code that prepares tables and queries
############

for (int counter = 0; counter < _tableNames.Count; counter++)
{
rda.Pull(_tableNames[counter].ToString(), _queries[counter].ToString(), rdaOleDbConnectString, RdaTrackOption.TrackingOn, "MobileError");
}

the For loop runs with no problems but no data is ever put (or tables created) into the Mobile DB.

A few things here -

1. from pocket internet explorer on your device or emulator, do you get a correct diagnostic message when you use the url http://10.1.1.206/mobile/sqlcesa30.dll ? if not, then your first issue is you aren't successfully getting from device to the server.

2. your connection string is screwed up. try this instead: connectionString = @."Data Source = \Program Files\client\db\MobileDB.sdf"

3. you do realize that the database must exist already before the pull? and that none of those tables can exist when you call pull? (you need to drop all the tables you want to pull from the server before you call rda.Pull()

4. the values you are using for <user> and <password> must represent a valid SQL Server login as well as have permissions on the specific database you are pulling from <DB>

5. what are you using for primary keys on the tables you are pulling? IDENTITY columns are going to get you into trouble with multiple users pulling with tracking turned on. better to switch to uniqueidentifiers (GUIDs).

Try that much and let me know.

Darren

|||

To answer your questions:

1. I get "SQL Server Mobile Server Agent 3.0" when I try to browse to the URL

2. I will try it without the quotes.

3. Yes, I know the tables must not exists prior to PULL

4. I had made the SQL user a db_owner

5. GUIDS

|||

It did not work, I changed the connection string from:

"Data Source=\"\\Program Files\\client\\db\\MobileDB.sdf\"";

to

"Data Source=\\Program Files\\client\\db\\MobileDB.sdf";

and it still didn't work

|||

if I understand correctly, you are not getting an exception, you're just not getting the tables created in the SQL mobile database after the pull? Are you just using a SELECT * FROM statement to pull each table? Maybe try reducing this to pulling a single table in case there is some issue with your logic to iterate through a collection of tables pulling each one. Also - not knowing the schema of the server side db, are there any constraints on those tables?

-Darren

|||

I just remembered something that I bet is your issue - when you install SQL Server, you have to specify an authentication mode for the server. By default, it is Windows Authentication. In your RDA connection string, you are using SQL Server authentication. As a result, you need to make sure your instance of SQL Server is set to "Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication).

Hope that helps.

Darren

|||Thanx, I'll try that|||we decided to give merge replication a shot, we may comeback to trying RDA later.

rda dropping primary key index

I am using RDA to download a tables

I use TrackingOffWithIndexes

the issue is that when I download a small set of data the primary key index is there

when I download a larger set. the index gets dropped (no error) just slowness when querying the table

the max database size is set to 1024mb and the temp database size is set to 1024mb

the actual db size (with the missing index) is 262 mb... lot's of room left!

when I try to create the index manually after the download in sql server management studio I get this error:

Not enough storage is available to complete this operation

I am using 2GB sd cards and nothing else is on the card.

any ideas?

Regards,

eric [at] westgen com

This indicates an out of error condition, make sure you dispose of the RDA objects before creating the index in code.|||

Thanks for the reply but

when running the code I get NO error... just a missing index

the index should come down automatically as long as it can fit in the db size... but it does not.. it only comes down whith a smaller set of data.

The error I get when creating the index manually is in sql server management studio... and there is no rda object to get rid of

can you please explain your reply a little more

eric

|||How wide is your index, please detail schema and create index statement. Do you create the index with the sdf file on your hard disk or on the SD card?|||

Hi,

The table could have in excess of 1 million rows... I am not sure at how many it decides not to download the index/primary key constraint but it seems to be around the point where the database reaches 150mb although as stated previously the max size and max temp file size are set to 1024 mb

The table structure is:

Bull_id int

Cow_id int

Inbreeding_Value real

the primary key is bull_id, cow_id

I used this script to try to manually apply the index/key

ALTER TABLE INBREEDING ADD
CONSTRAINT PK_INBREEDING PRIMARY KEY
(
COW_Id,
BULL_Id
)

the db was on the device at the time I did not try from the desktop

the goal here is not to do this manually but to have the index be downloaded with the rda pull command

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Hi..

I have meet the same problem, too.

I create a table with 1,380,000 rows data,

the db real size around 114 MB.

The primary key size is nchar(6).

When I use RDA pull, I found that the primary

key in the PDA disappear. So, It took a long time

to get query response.

But when I delete some rows to 680,000 rows of data.

After I pull, The primary key can pull from the SQL Server.

PS: I didn't change any code. Just delete some rows.

Is that SQL-Mobile's bug!!!

Raw File Source issue

I have a single file that contains records destined for multiple tables. The "first" record is considered primary and the other records are considered "secondary" (meaning that they have foreign keys to the primary table).

In order to properly insert this I needed to use two data flows. The first data flow directed the primary rows to the primary table and the secondary rows get directed to a raw file destination. The second data flow read in from the raw file and wrote out the rows to the appropriate tables.

But here is my problem.

This darn validation! While I think validation is a great idea, the extensive use of it in what seems like EVERY aspect of SSIS seems to cause more headaches than not...

When I deploy my package and try to run it I get an error because the raw file source DOES NOT EXIST. Of course it does not exist, it gets created when the package runs... I cannot deploy something that does not exist yet.

I even have a problem while I am trying to work with the package in VS. The only way to get the package to run is to disable the second data flow so it does not try to validate it. Run the package so the raw file is created. And then re-enable the second data flow again. (Which then I guess I could take the raw file and deploy it with my package but that just seems silly.... deploying temporary files... that would be like deploying Internet Explorer with the Temporary Internet Files folders....)

And of course with that type of solution my package could never "clean up" after itself...

Try setting DelayValidation to TRUE for all source / destination components

|||I have used DelayValidation on other objects but I do not see any property of that sort when looking at the Raw File Source. The only thing I see with the word valid is ValidateExternalMetadata. Should I be looking elsewhere?|||

Yes, DelayValidation is a task property not a component property so you would need to set it on the DataFlow task that contains the component you need to have validation delayed on. Note that this delays the validation for all the components in the task not just the one component you need it for.
