Read/Only access to Northwind database
This is one of those things I want to be 100% sure to get right because we
are opening this user to the world.
How do I create a user in SqlServer that has read/only access to Northwind.
No access to any other database and only R/O access to Northwind?

see the "too much free time video" - http://www.windwardreports.com/film.htmTry:
1) Create a login
2) Add the login as a user to the Northwind database
3) Add the user to the db_datareader fixed database role
Be sure that you remove the guest user, if present.

Read Text file from SqlServer
Hi Frinds,
I have the text file in my server.
Is it possible to read the text file and insert into table via sql server stored procedure.
yes. You can use BCP or BULK INSERT to do the job. Refer to Books Online for more details. http://search.live.com/macros/sql_server_user_education/booksonlineFriday, March 23, 2012
Read information from transaction log
I am a beginner in SQL/RDBMS and learning the different nuances of the SQL
Server. I know that all activities in a database are stored in a transaction
log and I can see where the file is stored. My question is how do I read any
information from a transaction log?
For example I delete a row manually in the Enterprise Manager (which I
should not have deleted), how do I Rollback that delete or how do I read the
transaction log to see what has happened and reverse that action.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Aditya. There isn't a documented method to read transaction log data. You can get
some info by using undocumented commands like DBCC LOG. A better method is
with a third party tool like Lumigent's Log Explorer www.lumigent.com.

If you are running in the FULL or BULK_LOGGED recovery model, you can backup
the current transaction log, restore the database (to a different name if
you want to keep the existing database intact) and then apply your
transaction log backups up to the point of the delete. See the Books Online
for more information.
Hope this helps.

Dan answered your question about reading the log.
For rollback, there is no way to do it from Enterprise Manager. Each insert,
update and delete is auto-committed.
The only alternative is to use a query tool like query analyzer, and use a
BEGIN TRANSACTION before any changes, and then if you're satisified with the
change you can COMMIT TRANSACTION, if you're not, you can ROLLBACK
TRANSACTION.

to generate SQL commands to redo or undo a specific transaction. That comes
in handy sometimes when developers have direct access to production

Reach SqlServer located another server
Hi,
I have a asp.net website and bind it with sqlserver but this sqlserver is located another server different from the server my website is located. So how can i bind them with eachother.
Thanks in advance...
Fine, just specify that server name (which is diffrent than the server where your web application in) in the connection string:
Server=YourDatabaseServerName;Database=YourDatabaseName;User ID= YourUserID; Password=YourPassword
Check out his for more examples:www.connectionstrings.com
Good luck.|||
Thanks my friend but i am sorry i forgot to ask my another question about how to connect database if it is different from sqlserver (i mean it can be oracle or something else) located another server.
Thanks in advance again...!

and click on the database that you are using (e.g. Oracle -> usehttp://www.connectionstrings.com/?carrier=oracle ).

Reaading and Processing a Recordset from Com object
Hi everybody.
I need help with the next topic.
From a stored procedure in sqlserver, I need to call a com+ dll, this dll connect ot another database diferent to sqlserver y return this dll must return to stored procedure a recordser for ther processing.
I tried with sp_OACreate, sp_OAMethod, sp_OAGetProperty but I did not know how to process a recordset
Thanks
Erik
You can return the recordset data as a multi-dimensional array and this will be streamed to the client. You can use INSERT...EXEC on the server-side to capture the results into a temporary table for example. You can't return the recordset object directly since SQL Server will not know how to process it. See sp_OAMethod topic in BOL for more details.

RDA Pull Error table
My dev environment: VS2005, SQLServer Mobile, SQLServer 2005 server db, PPC windows app.
Having a problem with pull. First pull works fine. I request an error table from the pull. When I need to repull, I drop the table, but if I try to programmatically delete the error table, I get the message that the table has restricted DDL operations allowed. Apparently Drop is not allowed. Sometimes dropping the main table deletes the error table, sometimes it doesn't. If I try to repull and the error table is there, the pull fails.
I've tried "flushing" my cache by closing my connection and reopening, but that doesn't work.
Any ideas?
I have a similar problem--I have primary key indexes on the table I'm trying to pull which DONT go away when the table is dropped. I can't delete them because they give me the same "restricted DDL operations" error, and the pull fails when they are around.
I posted about it a while back, but never did get a reasonable response. Right now I'm deleting my entire database each time I do a pull, which is a very ham-fisted way of doing it, and it's awful slow. Unfortunately, no one else seems to be able to help...
-Kevin
|||Just to narrow down the problem can you do the following:
Before dropping the main table can you soft-reset the device and drop the main table? I am really interested to know the root cause of the problem. Also please note that, just clicking ok on any device app does not actually close the app but pushes it to background. To termainte the app, you need to go to Start Menu => Settings => System => Memory => Running Programs ==> Stop the process

|||Whether I drop it from my program or from QA, I sometimes get the error table deleted, sometimes not. That's after a reset. I'm pretty sure I've got my app closing correctly now, which it wasn't before, but now if I look at memory as you suggest, there is no vestige of my program hanging around. I finally decided I didn't really need the error table anyway and so have excluded it from my pull arguments.
However, a related problem promises to be an even bigger headache. Occasionally, dropping the main table does not manage to delete the appropriate entries in __SysRDASubscriptions, so that when I go to pull that table again, even though the actual table has been dropped, the pull informs me that it can't upupdate __SysRDASubscriptions before of a dup entry (error 25016). The only workaround I can think of is to backup the tables I need in my .sdf, trash the original and create a new db - a big hack to say the least.
As to what causes the entry not to be deleted, sometimes the database is corrupt (.Verify returns false), but repairing doesn't take care of __SysRDASubscriptions dirty entry.

And guess what, __SysRDASubscriptions is read-only, so I can't "delete from" either.
Any ideas?

Hi Braden,
This problem is in locating the other sql mobile dlls while dropping the table.
This problem does not appear if you have all of the following in a single directory:
1) SQL Mobile product DLLs
2) SQL Mobile tools (such as ISQLW30.EXE in case you are using it!)
3) Customer application which uses RDA
4) Any other binary that is using SQL Mobile binaries
Please be patient while we work on the problem.

Unfortunately, no one else seems to be able to help...

ratio of disk traffic to network traffic
Server? I've got 5x the disk traffic as network traffic and wondering
whether this indicates inefficiency in query design. The answer is, as is so often with computers and software, "it depends."
If you are talking about actual disk reads/writes, then...
For a well designed and configured OLTP database, the ratio between disk and
NIC bytes can be very small -smaller than 1:2 (with adequate memory and
fully cached data).
However, for OLAP (or Reporting Servers), the ratio can be very high (I've
seen over 1000:1) since a lot of output in that usage is summary data.

There isn't a "normal" ratio for such a thing. For instance, consider
the following OVERLY SIMPLIFIED example:
1. I submit a query to SQL - "SELECT DISTINCT TOP 1 Address1 FROM
CustomerAddress", less than 40 characters being piped in as network traffic.
2. CustomerAddress contains 50 million rows, with Address1 being the
first line of a customer address, defined as a VARCHAR(255). There are
no indexes on the CustomerAddress table.
3. To find all of the distinct Address1 values, SQL is going to scan
the Address1 table, looking at each of the 50 million rows - lots of
disk I/O.
4. The TOP 1 clause will result in only a single row being returned by
the query, containing a single VARCHAR(255) column - AT MOST 255
characters of data will be returned.
So, you can see there is very little network traffic, but a large amount
of disk I/O produced. Query efficiency, indexes, schema design, all
will have a direct effect on the amount of disk I/O that you see.
Network I/O means very little in relation to disk I/O.
