Read single piece of data from SqlDataSource to a variable?

First I want to say thanks to the folks how have helped me over the past week or two.

I'm missing a crucial piece of insight. How do I read a single piece of data from a SqlDataSource which only hold one row of data into a declared variable?

string zUserName = SqlDataSource.(get the value in the row that is labeled UserName)

It really doesn't matter to me whether it is an SqlDataSource or some other data container that hold the data I've selected. My goal is to be able to read some data from some predefined datasource into a declared variable.

If I am approaching this problem in the wrong way any advice or article links you could give me would be grealy appreciate.

Thanks, Bill

It's not really meant to do that, but you CAN if you want to by binding the datasource to a hidden field, telling the hidden field to databind, and then picking up its value (Optionally resetting the hidden field to nothing again).

Really want you want is the sqlconnection and sqlcommand for that type of work. SqlDataSource is for populating UI controls with databinding.

Read Backup File Directly?

Is there a way to read a backup file to see if it contains a file without
restoring the backup file? We are missing a record from a table, and I need
to find out when it was deleted. We have nightly backup files of the
database. Is it possible, knowing the database name, the table name, and the
primary key value of the record, to determine if the record exists in a
certain backup file? If not, is there an alternate way to determine when a
particular record was deleted?

Thank you!

You can use RESTORE FILELISTONLY to list the backups within a backup file.

You need to restore the backup. But you could restore it under a different
name.

have to restore the backups one at a time, and look at the database after
each restore to see if it were there.

Thanks,

Neil

RDLC...Printer Control

The icon in the preview bar is missing, what I am doing wrong that I cannot
get it to display? On May 10, 6:09 pm, "Chris Marsh" <cma...@.synergy-intl.com> wrote:

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like that the basic
images that are part of the reporting software are not deployed to (or
do not exist in) the correct path (relative to the Reports/Report
Server virtual directories) on the Report Manager. Sorry that I could
not be of further assistance.
Regards,
Enrique Martinez
Sr. Software Consultant|||Actually, if I run it from the dev studio it displays and works it's when I
put the controls on our Dashboad page (IE7 browser) that we've created where
only the printer doesn't appears as well as the bottom scroll bar. The Zoom,
Back button, all the others work but not the Printer or the bottom scroll
bar.
I think this must be a bug with IE7 and SSRS. I spoke with an associate of
mine and he complained about the bottom scroll bar not displaying in IE7.
If anyone has a suggestion that would be great otherwise I guess I pay MS
for a call to post a bug with them.
Thanks!

MS is pretty much abandoning newsgroups. This newsgroup was starting to die
down and I was contemplating moving to it myself.

RC1 oledb provider missing registry key

The RC1 installer (and the previous beta too) doesn't write in the following registry key:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{32CE2952-2585-49a6-AEFF-1732076C2945}\OLE DB Provider]
@.="Microsoft SQL Server CE 3.0 OLE DB Provider for Windows"

so this provider doesn't appear on the oledb "Data Link Properties" panels. Manually entering the above key solves the problem. The last summer CTP version has been done this trick.

Excellent - thanks for the info

Rare behavior

Hi!
My SQL Server has a rare behavior ... some times I can't find database objects like sp's, relations, etc (objects missing). So, I think in scenes:
* security
* virus (like slammer)
* SQLServer becomes "crazy"
Dou you have been in this problem? How did you solve it?
Thanks so much in advance
Note: The SQL server has not installed any service pack. It exists a firewall too.
What does "can't find" mean? Can you show an example, including syntax used
to create objects, syntax used to "find" objects, and what error messages
you receive?
